Jefferson:
Nothing can stop the man with
the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing
on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
Playing baseball is not real life.
It's a fantasy world... It's a dream come true. ~Dale Murphy~
From "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis:
The point about Lenny, at least to Billy, was clear: Lenny
didn't let his mind screw him up. The physical gifts required to
play pro ball were, in some ways, less extraordinary than the
mental ones. Only a psychological freak could approach a 100-mph
fastball aimed not at all that far from his head with total
confidence. "Lenny was so perfectly designed, emotionally, to
play the game of baseball," said Billy. "He was able to
instantly forget any failure and draw strength from every
success. He had no concept of failure."
Tom Seaver-
Nicknamed "Tom Terrific" and "The Franchise", Seaver had 311 win
, 3,640 strikeouts and a 2.86
earned run average during a 20-year career. In 1992, he was
inducted into the
National Baseball Hall of Fame by the highest percentage
ever (98.8%), and currently has the only plaque at
Cooperstown wearing a New York Mets hat.
“The difference between the physical
abilities of the players in the major leagues is not that great,
and, something going hand in hand with that, the difference
between teams is not that great. So what it comes down to is
that the dividing factor between the team that wins and the one
that loses is the mental attitude, the effort they give, the
mental alertness that keeps them from making mental mistakes.
The concentration and the dedication- the intangibles- are the
deciding factors, I think, between who won and who lost. I
firmly believe that, I really do.”
Does great pitching always
beat great hitting? Some thoughts from an online discussion
group:
First, great pitchers will be all right
no matter what caliber of offense they face. Second, good
pitchers will still do well, but against an amazing offense they
will have their difficulties. Third, don't throw mediocre
pitchers up there against good offenses-just don't. Fourth,
while the phrase "good pitching beats good hitting" is largely
true, it does not hold so strongly true that you should bet your
bottom dollar on the team with the best pitching. Good pitching
has nice chances against good hitting, but not so good that the
game's outcome is anywhere close to inevitable just because an
ace is on the mound.
